Good boy, Bug!
The boy who started it all.
Sitka. How to write about my lovable goofy Bug?
Simply, Sitka lives for birds and snuggling. He is quite possibly the happiest dog on the face of the planet. Sitka's shining feature is his bombproof temperament. Ever the stereotypical velcro vizsla male, Sitka has never met a stranger and greets everyone with a wiggling butt and attempted kiss. Spoiled rotten at home, he is quite content curling up on the couch or snuggling under the covers on long study days. His tail never stops wagging except when he's on point or zonked out sleeping. Most of all, especially for his field training, Sitka is forgiving. He takes each lesson in stride, understands when he makes mistakes and is not a dog to pout. He is not a soft dog; rather, he is biddable with the single goal in life of pleasing his people… and finding birds.
Sitka is a fun dog to watch compete. His gait is powerful and eye-catching, his tail never stops snapping as he tears through cover, finishes running edges, or punches out to the next distant objective. His enthusiasm and application makes judges watch him. He points standing tall, with his tail cranked as high as it will go and head pointing skyward… unless he's pinned a running bird, then that tail stays up and his head is intensely low. He's a dog that is easy to read on his game, eager to please, and a joy to handle. He is gorgeous on his birds, solid broke to wing shot and fall and is a natural retriever.
Sitka hunts all winter and runs in Field trials during the spring and fall. At field trials, it would be hard to guess that the horseback shooting dog transforms into a foot hunting dog when "mom" has a shotgun in hand. Knowing the difference between the games, my little Field Trial dog becomes a thorough hunting dog in the thick cover of a creek bottom looking for quail. He knows when to stretch out in big CRP fields for pheasants, but checks in with his hunters before streaking off to the distance. Switching gears to a duck blind, Sitka is a capable duck dog. He has several waterfowl seasons under his belt, dozens of retrieves on ducks and geese nearly as big as himself, and multiple blinds, double and triple retrieves. Land or water, through mud, muck or snow, he will always bring me back our bird. He's also the "clean up" dog searching out the cripples that soared off with that amazing nose of his.
I'm obviously biased, but he's pretty awesome.

More officially, Sitka has a knack for setting new records and taking names. He easily earned his Puppy/Derby points towards his Field Championship in Colorado all breed horseback trials. Through his limited Derby career, he was also named Colorado Derby Dog of the Year for the 2012-2013 season. He has since been broke out and started competing in Gun Dog stakes, finishing both his FC and AFC in his first year out as a broke dog. He finished his Field Championship in style, opening the season with a big win in Open Gun Dog at the Skyline Brittany Club horseback field trial for a 5 point major (33 starters) in tough all breed competition. He then went on to win both OLGD and ALGD back to back at the Rocky Mountain Vizsla Club's horseback FT for two 3 point retrieving majors to finish his FC. Within the same month he finished his Amateur Field Championship wracking up several more 1st and 2nd placements in major gun dog stakes! Rewarded for his excellent first season, Sitka was named Colorado Open Gun Dog of the Year and Colorado Amateur Gun Dog of the Year for the 2014-2015 field trial season! He is the first Vizsla to ever earn the Open Gun Dog of the Year all-breed award in Colorado and the first dog of any breed to win both Open and Amateur in the same year. He has been shown in the show ring sparingly, as his focus is primarily Field events. In the middle of Field Trial season he took a short trip down to New Mexico with Sarah Luther to earn his first major -- a 5 POINT major -- in the show ring! Later, in the winter, he stepped back in the show ring after recovering from a foreign body pneumonia and picked up his second major in Iowa to FINISH his Championship, making him the breed's 196th DUAL Championship! With his DC finished, we headed to our first VCA National Specialty show in Topeka, Kansas and Sitka really out did himself. Entered in the prestigious All Star Review, he was named Best in Review over 21 other very decorated dogs under breeder judges Betty Rosanek, Kathy Englesman and Fran Johnson. The next day he won the Field Trial Dog Class with Sarah, making it a very memorable first VCA National Specialty. The next month I made my big move from Colorado to South Dakota to start Family Medicine Residency and Sitka joined Sarah on the road. In four weekends as a Special Sitka picked up two Best of Opposites, four Select Dogs, one Specialty Award of Merit, four GCH majors and five shows with other CHs defeated. He is the first vizsla to be major pointed towards both Grand Field and Grand Championship titles. After taking to the Field in the Fall, Sitka returned to the show ring in the winter with half a left ear and just coming off a muscle injury in his rear to finish his Grand Championship with two more 4 point majors in one weekend! Switching gears yet again, Sitka and I trained for his NAVHDA Utility test without actually having ever attended one before. Although he wasn't perfect, Sitka earned a Utility Prize 2! He became the FIRST vizsla to have a GCH DC AFC and earn a Utility Prize.
He keeps setting the bar. I am beyond proud of my Bug!!
Sitka has passed the torch on to his sons and grandsons -- he is unfortunately no longer available at stud. Please see Cinder, Oliver, Perrin, Orivs, Driggs and Ghost's pages!
