Vixen was an unexpected but very welcome addition to the red dog crew. She joined the family in December of 2015 after being returned to her breeder for "too much drive"... which still makes me chuckle. If I ever meet her first owner, I will have to thank him, because he gave me the opportunity to bring this girl into my life. Vix comes from a nicely decorated pedigree, with multiple siblings that have had National level successes in the field. When given the opportunity to add her to the family, it was an easy decision. Splitting her first year in Colorado between my home and her trainer's, Vixen integrated into house life without looking back. She is a lovable, easy dog in the house, as calm as can be, always wanting to be next to you on the couch and willing to snuggle. She is a calm, sweet, quiet dog... until dinner time -- then she'll tell you all about how much she loves food. Vixen lives for snuggling, birds, and treats (in that order!). In the field, she transforms into a power house of a bird dog. Her gait is fast, forward, light footed, and snappy. She is smart on the ground and has a natural forward pattern, sticking to her edges like glue and making her a joy to run in field trials.
As a bird dog, Vixen is second to none. She is by far my most athletic dog, with heat tolerance that never ceases to astound me. She has tackled Colorado scaled quail, South Dakota pheasants, and eastern Washington huns, valley quail, and chukars. The girl has proved to be a natural retriever, a biddable duck-blind dog, and is quite a fish in the water. She always puts meat on the table, and happily curls up on the couch after a hunt.
Vix made her debut in the show ring and quickly figured the game out. At just her second show with Sarah, she won Best of Winners for her first points -- a 4 point major! In short order she finished her Championship, showing in a variety of states from New Mexico and Colorado to Nebraska and Missouri. A moderate girl with a lot of body for her petite frame, she has a lot of potential in the ring. After spending most of the winter chasing SD roosters, Vixen got to work with Aleah German and earned her Senior Hunter the next Spring!! I am so proud of how far this girl has come.
Vix tackled motherhood with ease and produced three litters. Her first two sired by our Sitka, and last by the handsome and talented VC Reggie. Her kids continue to excel in the field, show ring, agility, obedience and Search and Rescue. She passed down her sweet and easy temperament, athleticism and vocal antics to most all her kids. We are now enjoying watching her pups grow up and compete, and she is enjoying retirement on the couch next to me and riding shotgun to the bird fields during hunting season.
